Honoring the Majesty of Horses: National Day of the Horse

A group of horses graze in a grass field.

Every year on December 13th, horse lovers and enthusiasts across the country unite to celebrate National Day of the Horse. This special day honors horses' contributions to the history, economy, and character of the United States.

Horses have been steadfast partners throughout history, aiding agriculture, transportation, and exploration. From pulling plows to delivering mail through the Pony Express, their strength and resilience have shaped civilizations. Beyond their historical contributions, horses symbolize freedom and embody the pioneering spirit of the American West.

Today, they remain companions and therapy aids, forming deep bonds with humans. Equine therapy has become a vital resource for emotional and physical healing, demonstrating our incredible connection with these majestic creatures.

Celebrate the Season of Giving

This year, make National Day of the Horse even more meaningful by giving back. Join us as we celebrate the season of giving and explore how you can make a difference this holiday season.

Ryerss Farm is the oldest non-profit horse sanctuary in the United States. We care for aged, abused, and injured horses, providing them with a peaceful home where they can live out their golden years grazing in green pastures. Many of our horses served their communities before retiring at Ryerss Farm. Your support ensures they receive the highest-quality care.

Here are ways to show your appreciation:

  • Sponsor a Horse ($500/year): Sponsor one of our residents to cover their essential care and supplies.

  • Horse Pedicure ($50): Treat your favorite horse to a Ryerss pedicure! Horses need their hooves trimmed every 6-8 weeks.

  • Dental Visit ($75): Give the gift of a healthy smile by sponsoring a dental visit! Ryerss horses need a dental visit once a year.

  • Greener Pastures Plate ($100): Honor a horse who has "Gone to Greener Pastures."

  • Memory Board Plate ($100): Celebrate someone special with a plate on our memory board.

  • Memory Plate ($300): Donate a brass plate in memory or honor of a friend or animal.

  • Stall Endowment ($3,000): Dedicate a stall to someone special with a personalized brass plaque.

With our donation platform, supporting Ryerss Farm is easier than ever! Simply set the frequency, choose your donation amount, and share your reason for giving—all in just a few minutes.

You can also show your appreciation by visiting the farm at no cost! Experience the peace of equine retirement, connect with nature, and spend quality time with our cherished residents. Ryerss Farm is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm.

A Tribute to their Legacy

National Day of the Horse isn't just about celebrating horses' beauty—it's about recognizing their contributions and ensuring their welfare. Horses have given us their strength, loyalty, and companionship. Now, it's our turn to give them the care and respect they deserve. Your donation is more than a gift; it's a tribute to their legacy and a commitment to their future.
